No. 5 Sabre ACHA D2 splits with No. 8 Sault

FOND DU LAC - No. 5 Marian University ACHA D2 (15-3-0, 9-0-0 NCHL) finished the season series with No. 8 Sault defeating the Cougars 5-1 followed by a 4-2 defeat.

GAME 1 (W, 5-1)
  • A defensive beginning to the game saw neither side score.
  • Marian then dominated the second period outshooting Sault 15-9 and scoring three times.
  • Cayden Frenette opened the scoring before Sault responded to quickly tie the game at 1-1.
  • A power-play goal from Jackson Sweeney gave Marian the lead right back followed by a score from Aiden Tegart.
  • The Sabres were able to put the game out of reach in the final period with a power-play goal from Devon Butler and an even-strength score from Justin Doucette.
GAME 2 (L, 4-2)
  • It was Sault who had a strong start quickly building a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.
  • Gavyn Galloway was the lone goal scorer for Marian.
  • The Sabres netted the only score of the second period when Easton Nick lit the lamp to cut the Marian deficit to just one going into the final 20 minutes.
  • The Cougars limited Marian in the final period and netted a short-handed empty-net goal to put the final at 4-2.
