Marian ACHA D2 goes undefeated at home showcase

FOND DU LAC - Marian University ACHA D2 hockey (5-2-1, 1-2-1 NCHL) went undefeated on the weekend at the Marian Showcase.

GAME 1 vs. SAULT (HOME, W, 4-3)
  • The Sabres fell behind early after Sault scored 4:18 into the first period and followed it up less than two minutes later.
  • Gavyn Galloway got the Sabres on the board with 8:30 to go in the first period with help from Easton Nick and Andrew Nesbitt.
  • A power-play goal by Anthony O'Neal assisted by Ashton Underhill and Nick tied the game up 2-2 early in the second period.
  • Connor Cozens put the Sabres ahead early in the third period with assists from Chris Regan and Nick.
  • The Cougars responded eight minutes later to bring the game back to 3-3.
  • A late major penalty for the Cougars proved costly as Underhill put away the game-winning goal on said power play.
  • Jackson Sweeney and Cozens assisted on the goal.
GAME 2 vs. JAMESTOWN (HOME, W, 5-3)
  • The Jimmies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead by the 14:22 mark of the first period.
  • The Sabres responded 14:52 into the first period when Anthony O'Neal netted a goal assisted by Chris Regan and Devon Butler.
  • Jamestown scored with 3:38 remaining in first period to head into the break ahead 3-1.
  • Most of the second period was quiet with scoring until O'Neal struck with his second of the game to make the score 3-2.
  • The Sabres came out of the break hot with Ashton Underhill scoring his second of the weekend.
  • The goal was assisted by Jace Weber and Easton Nick.
  • O'Neal then completed the hat trick with 1:11 remaining in the third period to give the Sabres the lead 4-3.
  • Butler and Justin Newlin were credited with assists on the goal.
  • Cayden Frenette iced the game with 25 seconds remaining with an assist from Nick.
GAME 3 vs. AURORA (HOME, W, 7-3)
  • The Sabres created a 2-0 lead within the first eight minutes of the game with a goal from Easton Nick, assisted by Ashton Underhill and Connor Cozens.
  • Underhill then netted his own with an assist to Cayden Frenette.
  • Aurora responded 11:03 into the first period to make the game 2-1.
  • A short-handed goal by Jackson Sweeney, assisted by Gavyn Galloway, furthered the Sabre lead to 3-1.
  • Another Underhill goal, assisted by Keynan Miller and Frenette, 2:11 into the second period continued the momentum for Marian.
  • Nick added his second goal of the game midway through the period assisted by Underhill and Cozens to put Marian ahead 5-1.
  • The Spartans pushed back with two goals of their own to end the second period 5-3.
  • A pair of goals scored by Cayden Frenette iced the game for Marian to bring the final score to 7-3.
