Strong finish falls short for Sabre women's basketball in close loss

FOND DU LAC - Marian University women's basketball (1-9, 0-3 NACC) outscored Lakeland 17-7 in the fourth quarter, but fell 60-52 in a competitive contest.

  • Sophomore Taycee Schwanke's fastbreak layup gave Marian its first points with 6:42 left in the first quarter. 
  • Marian dug itself into an early hole, as Lakeland went on a 13-4 run to end the first quarter and take a 23-10 lead.
  • The Sabres went scoreless for five minutes until senior Brianna Guelig broke the drought with a layup, with Marian trailing by 15.
  • The second quarter was even, with both teams scoring 14 points. Senior Chelsea King closed the half with a three-pointer, making the score 37-24. 
  • Lakeland and Marian combined for 23 first-half turnovers, giving the Muskies a 19-0 advantage in points off turnovers at the break. 
  • Marian opened the fourth quarter with a 14-2 run, capped by an and-one layup from freshman Dasha Yeltysheva, cutting the lead to single digits for the first time since the opening quarter. 
  • Freshman Cassandra Arndt hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to five with two minutes remaining. 
  • Neither team scored for over a minute until Lakeland's Meghan MacPhee hit a jumper, extending the Muskie lead to seven with 56 seconds left. 
  • Sophomore Emily Eastham's layup with 41 seconds remaining was the Sabres' final shot attempt, as Lakeland held on for a 60-52 win.

  • Lakeland shot just 3-of-18 (.166) from the field in the fourth quarter, allowing the Sabres to rally back into the game. 
  • The Sabres recorded their second-highest assist total of the season with 15, led by Eastham's four. 
  • Marian committed 20 turnovers, 14 of them in the first half, resulting in a 21-4 deficit in points off turnovers. 
  • Junior Muskies forward Meghan MacPhee finished with 20 points and six rebounds on 10-of-14 shooting.
