Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Marian men's basketball stumbles late in loss

FOND DU LAC - Marian University men's basketball (2-3, 0-1 NACC) led by three with four minutes remaining, but a late surge propelled Concordia Wisconsin to a 66-61 victory.

  • In a gritty first half, Marian held Concordia Wisconsin scoreless for over six and a half minutes, with the Falcons not scoring until the 14:27 mark.
  • Junior Andrew Ayeni looked aggressive out of the gates, scoring nine of the Sabres' first 17 points. 
  • A three-pointer from junior Rashawn Bost gave Marian its largest lead of the night, 22-11, with 7:55 left in the first half. 
  • The Falcons closed the first on a 16-6 run to cut the lead to one, before freshman Marvin Haslett beat the buzzer with a three-pointer. Marian took a four-point lead into the break.
  • Marian held the lead for the first ten minutes of the second half, with Ayeni continuing to make an impact by recording three early assists, two of which resulted in layups from senior Alex Vassilakis
  • A three-pointer gave Concordia Wisconsin its first lead of the second half with 9:55 remaining.
  • The Falcons held their lead until a three-pointer from senior Derek Lindert gave the Sabres a two-point advantage with 5:22 remaining.  
  • Back-to-back Falcon three-pointers reclaimed the lead with under three minutes to go.
  • Concordia's Casey Verhagen scored eight of the Falcons' final eleven points, leading Concordia Wisconsin to a 66-61 win over the Sabres.

  • The Sabres forced 18 Falcon turnovers, including 12 in the first half. Reigning NACC Player of the Week Logan Landers committed seven turnovers, with five coming before halftime.
  • Marian finished with 14 bench points, heavily outscoring Concordia's three. Only five Falcons scored in the contest. 
  • The Sabres couldn't replicate Sunday's success from beyond the arc, shooting 9-for-30 (.300) on the night. Marian attempted 14 more three-pointers than the Falcons. 
  • Seniors Micai Johnson and Jazz Orozco each recorded two steals, helping the Sabres finish with ten on the night. 
  • It was the 81st all-time meeting between the Sabres and Falcons, with Concordia Wisconsin holding a 48-33 lead in the series.
  • The Falcons have won the last four matchups, with three of those games decided by six points or fewer.

Junior Andrew Ayeni led the Sabres with 20 points, while also contributing eight rebounds and four steals. 
Senior Derek Lindert built on his career-high outing from Sunday, finishing with 16 points and four three-pointers. 
Senior Alex Vassilakis recorded his third double-digit rebounding effort of the season, grabbing 10 rebounds.
