Nothing was stopping the Marian University softball program in the middle of April as the Sabres won 10 straight games.
The double-digit winning streak is tied for the fifth-longest winning streak and just the sixth time in program history the Sabres had won double-digit games in a row. The stretch opened Sunday, April 13 with a historic sweep of Concordia Wisconsin. Senior
Kerena Wood hit a go-ahead home run in each game with her game two blast being a pinch-hit long ball. The sweep of the Falcons was the first since the 2009 season for the Sabres.
After a pair of mercy-rule wins over Alverno, Marian returned home to continue the stretch with six straight wins. Another historic sweep opened the homestand with Marian defeating Aurora 8-0 in six innings and 4-0. It marked the first sweep of Aurora in program history. Following a quick stop for Easter, the Sabres kept on rolling with a 3-2 win in nine innings and a 5-0 shutout of St. Norbert. With an eight-game win streak on the line, it was rivalry time with Lakeland coming to Smith Field. Another pair of defensive battles ensued with Marian coming away with wins of 1-0 and 2-1 over the Muskies. Â
The Sabre pitching staff was especially dominant during this stretch posting a 1.24 earned run average allowing only 12 earned runs. Sophomore
McKenna Repovich didn't allow a single run over six appearances and 14.2 innings pitched, while fellow sophomore
Sabrina Di Vito had a 1.34 earned run average over 31.1 innings of work with three shutouts. Offensively, Marian scored 65 runs and hit .375 as a team. Junior
Hope Matta proved to be a spark plug hitting 14-for-27 (.519) with 12 runs scored. Another sophomore in
Erin Cowe also dominated at the plate driving in 10 runs and scoring eight while hitting .412. Senior
Kendall Pliner had one of her best stretches of the season hitting .483 with nine runs driven in and three home runs.
Marian went on to earn a spot in the NACC Tournament for the third straight time and posted a winning record for the 12th time in the NACC era. Five Sabres earned All-NACC recognition highlighted by junior
Ariana Schliepp who was named an All-NACC Second Team honoree. Â
