Offensive outburst leads Marian NCAA men's hockey past Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. - Marian University NCAA men's ice hockey  (4-12-2, 3-8-0 NCHA) scored seven goals for the first time since 2023 to defeat Lawrence 7-2.

  • The Sabres were able to take an early lead with a pair of goals in the first 10:16 of the game.
  • Sophomore Eemil Rautio scored the opening goal before junior Cole Carlson lit the lamp.
  • The Sabres extended their lead with two special-teams goals in the first 3:53 of the second period.
  • Both goals came off the stick of sophomore Brendan Bottem with the first being a power-play score and the second a short-handed goal.
  • Junior Caden Carlson earned an assist on each of the first four goals of the game.
  • Sophomore Dayne Tews was able to get in on the action at the 11:14 mark to put Marian ahead 5-0 with Bottem playing a role in his third straight goal.
  • The Vikings trimmed the deficit to 5-2 going into the third period with two goals separated by just 3:15.
  • Carlson, Ca. found the back of the net for the first time with a power-play goal at the 6:17 mark to put Marian ahead 6-2.
  • Rautio finished off the scoring barrage with another power-play goal 3:10 later to put the final at 7-2.

  • Marian finished with a 35-32 edge in shots thanks to a third period where the Sabres had a 15-7 advantage.
  • The Vikings had 42-25 advantage on face-offs.
  • Marian finished 3-for-5 on the power play, with a short-handed goal, while Lawrence was 1-for-4.
  • This is the first time Marian has scored at least seven goals in a game since December 30, 2023 against Dubuque.
  • The four special-teams goals is the first since February 19, 2022 against No. 7 St. Norbert in the NCHA Harris Cup Quarterfinals.
  • The two squads have now split their first two meetings of the season creating a winner-take-all game for the Battle of Highway 41 traveling trophy.
  • Marian is now 62-17-10 all-time against Lawrence.

Junior Caden Carlson had a career-best five-point game scoring a goal to go with four assists.
Sophomore Brendan Bottem had a pair of goals and assists.
Sophomore Nicholas Von Kaufmann (1-4-2) made 30 saves in goal.  It was his third performance this season with at least 30 stops.
