Ayeni, Lindert lift Marian men's basketball past Concordia Chicago

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Senior Derek Lindert and junior Andrew Ayeni combined for more than half of the Sabres' points, helping Marian University men's basketball (14-9, 10-6 NACC) extend its hot streak with a 74-63 win over Concordia Chicago.

  • Junior Andrew Ayeni scored the first two field goals for the Sabres in the opening three minutes. 
  • An 11-2 run gave Marian a 16-7 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half. 
  • Senior Jazz Orozco converted a fastbreak steal into a basket, pushing the Sabres' lead to double digits, 22-12. 
  • Marian held a comfortable 37-20 lead at halftime, paced by Ayeni with 12 points and senior Derek Lindert with 11. 
  • After starting the second half 1-of-7 from the field, the Sabres got a three-pointer from Lindert to stay up by 17. 
  • The Sabres capped a 10-5 run with a fastbreak dunk from freshman Marvin Haslett, extending the lead to 49-31 with 13:22 remaining.
  • An Ayeni three-pointer gave Marian a 20-point advantage, but the Cougars slowly began to cut into the lead.
  • A bucket from Concordia Chicago's AJ Willard capped a 10-2 run, cutting the Marian lead to eight with three minutes remaining. 
  • CUC's comeback fell short as Marian iced the game from the free-throw line, making 8-of-10 in the final minute to secure a 74-63 win.
