No. 11 Marian ACHA D2 easily handles DePaul in Hap Cup opener

FOND DU LAC - No. 11 Marian University ACHA Division II (19-6-1, 5-4-1 NCHL) opened its title defense of the NCHL Hap Cup with an 8-3 victory over DePaul.

  • Marian dominated the opening period and it led to an early lead when Anthony O'Neal scored just 3:35 into the game.
  • The Blue Demons found an equalizer at the 8:15 mark to send the game into a 1-1 stalemate after the first period horn.
  • The second period saw Marian convert more shots into goals as the two squads combined for eight goals in the period.
  • Gavyn Galloway and Easton Nick each scored a goal separated by just 10 seconds to give Marian the lead for good.
  • Jackson Sweeney tipped in a shot in front of the net with 7:44 to play to put Marian ahead 4-1.
  • DePaul was able to cut the Sabre lead down to 4-3 scoring two goals in the span of 43 seconds.
  • A second O'Neal goal followed just 35 seconds later to extend the Sabre lead to 5-3.
  • The onslaught continued with Caden Frenette and Devon Butler each scoring in the final 2:03 to give Marian a 7-3 lead at the second intermission.
  • The third period saw the most even play of any period and with just 24 seconds remaining Brandon Fain was able to light the lamp, assists to Braden Yurkunas and Roenick Vosburg, to set the final at 8-3.

  • The Sabres opened the game with a 22-4 edge in shots after the first period.
  • Neither team had a power-play goal with Marian having four chances and DePaul five.
