Sabres and Warriors can't settle things

Box Score (Fond du Lac, WI) - Marian University and Wisconsin Lutheran College played to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes on Saturday afternoon at Smith Fields. The Sabres had a decisive 24-14 advantage in shots, but neither team could find the back of the net.

With the tie, the Sabres are 4-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the Northern Athletics Conference. The Warriors moved to 3-6-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the NAC.

Marian had a strong attack in the first period as they attempted thirteen shots, but couldn't get anything past Matt Eisold and the Warrior defense. Marian managed eight more shots in the second, but once again came up empty. In overtime, Marian got off one shot in the first OT and two in the second.

The Sabres had a good chance to win the game in both overtimes as the Warriors played a man down as they received a red card less than a minute into overtime.

Nick Henkemeyer (Prior Lake, MN) played solid in the tie as he stopped six shots.

Coach Peltonen's Quotes
“ Came away from this game disappointed, not in our play, but in the result. You can't take anything away from Wisconsin Lutheran, but I think we deserved the win, rather than the tie. We created some solid goal scoring opportunities, but weren't able to put them away. Lupe Hernandez, Peter Xiong, and freshman Denny Mudd were the leaders in getting these chances. Peter and Lupe were also instrumental in creating chances for others as well with their serves, getting endline, and penetrating passes. WLC had their own opportunities and our defense stood strong and our keeper Nick Henkemeyer came up big a couple times. Nick has been very steady for us in the goal this season so far. WLC with their effort and determination caused us some trouble, but we also created some of their chances by our poor decisions and clearances in the back. If there was one thing I really thought we showed vast improvement on, it was our wide play. We got into the wing channels a lot and in a variety of ways. What we need to continue to improve on is that final pass that creates a goal scoring opportunity.”

“Game balls go to Peter Xiong and Lupe Hernandez for their attacking play in the game, Nick Henkemeyer, Tito Vera, Dustin Hendrikse, and Kenny Pieper for the shutout. Noah Styer for his target play and hustle and Jim Chavez for his possession play and work ethic in the center of midfield.”
