(Fond du Lac, WI) - Marian University opened the 2010-2011 campaign with a nice 6-5 victory over UW-Stout. The game was full of excitement from the get-go, as there were six goals scored in the first period. Marian is now 1-0, while the Blue Devils are now 1-1.
The Sabres fell behind 2-0 early in this one, as the Blue Devils scored at the 1:36 and 1:51 marks in the first. Marian gathered themselves nicely and
Lane Boswell (Calgary, AB) scored at the 3:15 mark off assists from
Todd Collins (Whitby, ON) and
Mitch Kriz (Berwyn, IL). Dakota Dubetz (Chestermore, AB) then tied the contest just :14 later off an assist from
Nathan Brummitt (Calgary, AB).
Each team scored one more time in the period with Marian's
Matt Williams (Lacombe, AB) tallying his first career goal off assists from
Justin Cormier (Calgary, AB) and
Tommy Fitzpatrick (Ft. McMurray, AB).
In the second, the Blue Devils scored first, but Collins had the answer at the 4:16 mark.
Marian was solid in the third as Williams scored ten minutes in to give the Sabres a 5-4 lead.
Mike McCurtain (Eagle River, AK) and
Robbie Bailey (North Vancover, BC) each recorded their first Marian assists.
The eventual game-winner came from
Brendan Roberts (Calgary, AB) as he lit the lamp with a short-handed goal at the 14:51.
Brendan Hull (Calgary, AB) and Fitzpatrick assisted on the goal.
After a Marian penalty the Blue Devils made things interesting with a goal in the 17th minute. Marian's defense was able to hold the rest of the way to preserve the victory
The Sabres out-shot the Blue Devils 38-27 in the contest.
Alex Bjerk (Roseau, MN) stopped 22 shots in the victory.
