ST. LOUIS (SabreAthletics.com) – Behind 23 points from senior
Alexis Becker and outstanding team defense the Marian University women's basketball team claimed the Webster University Tip-off Classic by defeating host Webster, 71-64, in the championship game inside Grant Gymnasium today, Nov. 19.
Becker went 6-of-10 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe to help the Sabres stay undefeated on the season. Junior
Elizabeth Zutz added 15 points in the win. Defense reigned supreme for Marian on this night, though, as it held Webster to just 26.6 percent (17-of-64) from the field for the game.
MU improves to 3-0 on the season, while Webster falls to 0-3.
The Sabres led by 10 points at the half, 37-27, thanks to solid perimeter shooting after going 12-of-25 from the floor and connecting on seven three-pointers. Marian went 11-of-27 from downtown, significantly better than Webster's 4-for-19 effort from long distance.
Marian won despite being out-rebounded, 45-34, and committing 21 turnovers to just 16 for Webster.
The Sabres return home next Saturday, Nov. 26, when they will open Northern Athletics Conference play against reigning NAC regular season and tournament champion, Wisconsin Lutheran College. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. inside Sadoff Gymnasium.
