MILWAUKEE (SabreAthletics.com) – Senior
Alexis Becker became the 12th Sabre to reach 1,000 career points, but the Marian University women's basketball team dropped a Northern Athletics Conference road game to host Wisconsin Lutheran College, 73-49, inside the Recreation Complex this evening, Jan. 24.
Needing just five points to reach 1,000, the North Fond du Lac native eclipsed the mark with a jumper at the 6:58 mark in the first half. Marian Head Coach
Bill Peters then called a 30-second timeout so the Sabre faithful that made the trip could honor the senior. She needed just 69 games to reach the mark, holding a career scoring average of 14.6 points during her three seasons at Marian thus far.
The accomplishment couldn't have come against a tougher conference opponent as Wisconsin Lutheran came in with an unbeaten league mark, one that wouldn't change on this night. The Warriors jumped out to 13-4 lead in the first five minutes and never looked back. They placed three players in double figures, led by Shavon Dillon's 19 points on 9-of-15 from the field.
With the win, WLC improves to 14-3 overall, 11-0 in NAC play, while the Sabres fall to 11-8 (7-6 NAC).
The Warrior lead never shrunk to less than 12 in the second half and on both occurrences, WLC made a run. The latter was a 12-3 run to push the margin to 21 points. WLC led by as many as 25 on its way to the win.
Wisconsin Lutheran shot over 47 percent in the contest, going 29-for-41 from the field, including 4-of-10 from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Sabres had one of their worst shooting nights of the season, going just 16-for-57 (28.1 percent) from the floor and just 2-for-26 from three.
Becker scored 15 points in the game, going 5-for-11 from the field and 3-for-6 at the charity stripe.
Bianca Whittington and
Dani Huray both added nine points for the Sabres.
Sarah Albert added six points and a team-high seven rebounds.
For the Warriors, Katelyn Kuehl and Rachel Johnson both reached double-figures, adding 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Marian will return home next Thursday, Feb. 2, to take on Maranatha Baptist inside Sadoff Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
