Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – A game-high 21 points from senior Dani Huray wasn't enough to propel the Marian University women's basketball team to victory as Edgewood College stormed back in the final two minutes to grab a 62-57 win inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this afternoon, Dec. 21.
Huray notched a season-high 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including an 8-for-9 effort at the charity stripe. The Little Chute native gave the Eagles fits with her ability to create space and score with the shot clock winding down. However, she accounted for nearly half of Marian's field goals as it went just 14-for-51 (27.5 percent) from the field for the game.
Edgewood's Rachel Pope led two in double figures with 20 points on 5-of-9 shooting and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. She did most of her damage down the stretch and with the game still in the balance, draining a three with 1:56 left to give the Eagles a 55-54 lead before going 7-for-8 at the charity stripe in the final 1:24 to account for Edgewood's final 10 points.
The Sabres dropped to 3-7 overall, 3-2 in the NACC with the loss, while the Eagles improved to 3-7 (3-4 NACC) with the win.
After a back-and-forth first half that saw Edgewood take a, 29-27, lead into the locker room, the second half proved to be much of the same as there were 11 ties and 16 lead changes in the contest.
Marian was on the defensive for most of the second half, but neither team held a lead of more than five points until the final minute. Behind a pair of Huray free throws with 2:07 remaining, the Sabres took a 54-52 lead.
It was short-lived, however, as Pope then went on a personal 10-3 run the rest of the way to lead Edgewood to the win.
Marian freshman Emma Jarvey fell two points shy of a double-double, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds, while adding two steals and a block. Senior Sarah Albert added 10 points, including two three-pointers.
The Eagles dominated the glass with a 43-33 advantage and used to the tune of a 14-8 edge in second-chance points.
The Sabres will enjoy Christmas and the New Year before jumping back into league play with a home game against Benedictine University. Game time is set for 4:15 p.m.
