Offense Sputters in Blowout Loss to UW-La Crosse

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. (SabreAthletics.com) - Less than 24 hours removed from pounding out 20 hits and scoring 19 runs, Marian got a taste of their own medicine courtesy of UW-La Crosse. The Eagles pounded out 24 hits and shutout the Sabres, 19-0.

A leadoff single for sophomore Cole Miklavcic appeare to give Marian the start they were looking for after their last game against Augsburg, which resulted in 20 hits and 19 runs. However, with Miklavcic on first, sophomore Ty Gellinger popped up his sacrifice bunt attempt and had it caught by UW-La Crosse third baseman Josh Rowles.

Head Coach Jason Bartelt knew coming into the game that Marian would need a different approach than what they took into Monday's doubleheader against Augsburg.

"We knew we were going to have to play some small ball to manufacture runs," Bartelt said. "After Cole got on in the first, we tried to move him over and into scoring position, but couldn't get it done."

In the home half of the first, the Eagles wasted no time in getting on the board as they rattled off four straight hits, resulting in a 2-0 lead. Marian was able to get them to ground into a double play, but as a result, the third run of the inning came into score.

Senior Brandon Winfield settled down after the rocky first inning, keeping UW-La Crosse off the board until the bottom of the fifth. Still leading 3-0, the Eagles pounded out five more hits and three more runs to take a 6-0 lead.

Unlike every other game on this spring trip, Marian just could not get the bats going. Four of the nine innings for Marian went 1-2-3.

The best chance for the Sabres came in the top of the fourth when junior Jordan DeBoer tripled down the left field line. A strikeout, pop out and fly out spoiled any chance of getting the Marian shortstop home for the first run of the game.

Trailing 8-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th, the wheels came off the wagon for Marian as UW-La Crosse tacked on seven more runs to put the game out of reach at 15-0. As if that wasn't bad enough, they returned for four more in the eighth.

On 24 hits, UW-La Crosse pounded out 19 runs and handed Marian their third loss in four games after starting their Arizona trip 3-0.

The Sabres will hope to erase this from their memories as they will have a quick turnaround. On Wednesday, Marian will square off against Central College in a doubleheader before wrapping up their time in Arizona on Thursday morning with another nine-inning affair with UW-La Crosse.

First pitch against Central is scheduled for 12 p.m. CDT. The game will be broadcasted on SabreVision (http://tiny.cc/SabreVision).
