Sabres Finish the Season at Concordia Wisconsin

Box Score

MEQUON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.Com) – The Marian University women's basketball team put it all on the line, tonight, in a road match-up against Concordia Wis., but were unable to overcome a late Falcon surge as they fell 59-47 to finish their season.

It was a low-scoring affair in the first half as both teams struggled from the field. The Sabres (12-12, 8-11 NACC) started out successful, scoring 11 points in the first ten minutes, but registered only two points the rest of the half on made free throws by Sarah Olewinski.

Concordia (18-6, 14-5 NACC) shot just over 30 percent as a team in the half, but were unable to take advantage of the Sabres shooting troubles due to ball control issues. The Falcons committed 12 turnovers in the half, six of which were caused by the Sabre defense.

The Sabres picked it up offensively to start the second half and were able to cut the Falcon lead to one just under five minutes into play. Molly Kovarik and Brandi Bender made back-to-back baskets almost four minutes later to give the Sabres a four-point lead.

The lead went back and forth over the next five minutes, but a jump shot by Concordia's Madelyn Landgraf put the Falcons on top and sparked an 11-2 run to give them an eight-point lead with less than four minutes remaining.

Olewinski put the Sabres within six points late with a three-point shot, but the Falcon's responded with six unanswered points to end the night.

Marian seniors, Olewinski and Amelia Mirsberger, led the Sabres in shooting, finishing with 14 and 13 points respectively in their final game as Sabres. As a team the Sabres shot 22.6 percent on the night.

Coming into the night, the Sabres were holding onto the eighth seed in the NACC, but the Aurora Spartans overtook the final spot with a win over Alverno, tonight.

The Sabres will look to regroup over the off-season and attempt to bring the team back to the postseason in the 2015-16 season.
