Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's basketball team welcomed conference-leading Wisconsin Lutheran inside Sadoff Gymnasium for a mid-week match-up, tonight, Feb. 3. An explosive first half by the Warriors proved insurmountable as they cruised to an 82-47 win.
The Sabres (12-9, 8-8 NACC) had a tough time driving to the hoop as the Warriors swallowed up the lanes. Wisconsin Lutheran's Kristen Schulz was a constant disturbance to the Sabre offense as she totaled nine of the Warriors' 15 blocks. The Sabres were unable to get much of an offensive rhythm because of tight inside pressure by the Warriors (16-4, 13-2 NACC) as they shot 24.1 percent on the night.
Wisconsin Lutheran's offense came out fast and furious, starting the game with an 8-0 run. Forced shots by the Sabres prevented any sort of answer to the Warriors and less than halfway through the period they found themselves in an 18-point hole. The Sabres finished the half with 19 points on 13.8 percent shooting, while the Warriors shot 55.9 percent en route to a 32-point lead.
The second half was much more of an even battle as the Sabres started to have some success from beyond the arc. Lindsay Vogels was the team's sharp shooter as she went 2-for-3 from downtown. The Sabres scored 28 points in the second half, shooting slightly over 34 percent to finish strong, but still were outscored by the Warriors by three.
Schulz continued her conference-leading season, finishing the night one block away from a triple-double. She scored a game-high 27 points, while pulling down 17 rebounds. Maggie Gartner also had a solid night for the Warriors, scoring 14 points while bringing down nine rebounds.
Sarah Olewinski was the Sabres' leading scorer with 17 points. She finished the night going 3-for-7 from downtown in attempts to score some quick points late for the Sabres. Courtney Klister had an effective night defensively off the bench as she led the team with three steals.
The Sabres have three days off before they travel to Aurora to take on the ninth-place Spartans. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
