Marian Showcases Offense; Falls in Doubleheader

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Marian University baseball team pounded out 10 runs and 22 hits, however, the Sabres dropped a pair of decisions to Bethany Lutheran at the first day of the Tucson Invitational Games at the Kino Sports Complex.

Marian dropped game one 12-7 and the second game of the twin bill 9-3.

"I thought we swung the bats pretty well out of the gates, but we left a lot of guys on base," Marian head coach Jason Bartelt said. "Defense was okay, but we had one error each game that blew up on us. We need to learn from this and move on."

In the opener Marian used a three-run third inning to put the Sabres on the scoreboard.

Earl Vorpagel started the inning with a base hit and moments later Ty Gellinger doubled to center field to bring Vorpagel home.

The next better, Jordan DeBoer, homered to left field and the Sabres led 3-1.

The Vikings responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third and tied it at 3-3.

Marian re-took the lead in the top of the fourth behind Chase Eagan's sacrifice fly to right field to score Tony Grannis.

However, the lead was short lived. In the bottom half of the fourth the Vikings pushed across nine runs and seized control.

DeBoer batted 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Vorpagel went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

In game two the Vikings (3-3) used a three-run fifth inning to gain control.

TJ McCoy, Casey Seelow and Grannis each batted in a run.

The Sabres left nine men on base.

Marian (0-2) returns to the diamond Friday, March 13 against Northern State.
