The Marian Sabres swept Dominican 5-0 and 3-2 and qualified for the 2015 NACC Baseball Tournament Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Herr-Baker Field.
"We knew Dominican was going to be prepared and ready to go," Marian head coach Jason Bartelt said. "We have a talented group and they love to play baseball together. We've shown what we are capable of doing and I'm excited for the guys – they've earned it."
Marian's calling card has been its record-setting offense, however, the Sabre defense proved to be the difference.
In game one it was senior Bryce Taylor setting the tone.
Taylor (4-0), a 6-foot-4 righty, tossed a complete-game shutout while scattering four hits and striking out four.
The Sabres' offense provided Taylor with plenty of run support.
In the bottom of the second with one out and two runners in scoring position, senior Chase Eagan singled to right field to score a run. The next batter, Cole Miklavcic reached on a fielder's choice and Earl Vorpagel followed that up with a RBI single to give Marian a 3-0 lead after two complete innings of action.
Vorpagel and Eagan each added an RBI in the fourth and six innings to seize control and give Marian a 5-0 lead.
In the nightcap Tanner Biwer (4-2) threw eight innings and scattered four hits and allowed one run and two walks and struck out two.
"Tanner threw well and did a good job," added Bartelt. "He allowed some walks late but he was in control and pitched himself out of some jams."
Jordan DeBoer got the Sabre offense on board in the bottom of the fourth. The senior grounded out to the shortstop but brought Ty Gellinger in from third base to give Marian the lead. However, the Stars (11-24, 7-11 NACC) tied it the next inning to make it 1-1 after five complete innings.
Adam Ryan and Gellinger added RBIs in the bottom of the eighth and DeBoer entered in the top of the ninth to earn the save.
Marian (18-14, 13-3 NACC) returns to action Monday, April 27 with a doubleheader at Benedictine.
