RIPON, Wis. – The Marian University men's tennis team fought past Ripon 6-3 and earned its first win of the season Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

"Tonight we had a great effort and a finishing attitude," MU head coach Marcus Wiegert said following the match. "We got off to a great start in doubles (3-0) and played solid across the board in singles as well. We fell short in some tiebreaks, but overall we are progressing. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into the weekend."

The Sabres dominated in doubles action and jumped out to a quick lead. The No. 1 doubles team of Joey Dittman and Danny Roe won 8-5 and the No. 2 doubles squad of Patrick Schwoerer and Spencer Braswell rolled to an 8-2 victory.

The No. 3 doubles team of Zac Brandrup and Brandon Ruis finished off MU's doubles sweep and posted an 8-2 win.

The Sabres kept the momentum into singles play. In No. 3 singles Roe won 6-0, 6-3 and in No. 4 singles Braswell was dominant 6-0, 6-1.

Brandrup cleaned up in No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

MU narrowly missed out in other singles matches. Dittman fell short 6-4, 7-6 (10-8 tie-breaker) and Schwoerer lost in three sets 6-1, (6-3), 11-9.

The Blue and White returns to the court Saturday with homes matches versus Dominican and Concordia Chicago.
