FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Marian University men's tennis team earned its first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season with a 6-3 victory over Concordia Chicago. The Sabres also dropped a 5-4 nail-biter against Dominican.
"Today was an extremely long day for our tennis guys. Temperatures were 30 degrees warmer than they were on Wednesday afternoon in Ripon," MU head coach Marcus Wiegert said. "We battled and gave maximum effort. I wish we could have gotten to Dominican, but we fell late in the match. To finish the day with a victory was a positive for our program."
MU found success in singles action against CUC (1-4, 1-3 NACC). In No. 3 singles Danny Roe rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Spencer Braswell followed that with a 6-3, 6-4 win in No. 4 singles.
Zac Brandrup seized No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-1 and Brandon Ruis won No. 6 singles via default.
In No. 2 doubles Braswell and Brandrup easily won 8-3 and the No. 3 doubles squad of Zachary Stanczyk and Ruis won via default.
Against DU (2-7, 2-2 NACC) the Sabres started strong in No. 1 singles when Joey Dittman picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win.
In No. 5 singles Brandrup won in three sets 7-5, (6-2), 6-4.
The Sabres (2-7, 1-3 NACC) cruised in double play. The No. 1 team of Roe and Dittman won 8-6, while the No. 2 team of Patrick Schwoerer and Braswell were victorious 8-5.
MU returns to action next Saturday with matches against Concordia Wisconsin and Lakeland.
