Sabre Softball Swept by Benedictine to Open NACC Play

LISLE, Ill. - Marian University softball (5-9, 0-2 NACC) was defeated 10-2 in five innings and 11-10 in 11 innings at Benedictine.

GAME 1
  • The Benedictine offense had a strong opening game scoring multiple runs in three of four innings.
  • Sophomore Kerena Wood drove in a run with a double in the second and freshman Ariana Schliepp hit her third home run of the season in the fifth.
GAME 2
  • Marian came out quick in game two but Benedictine was able to rally to secure a sweep.
  • The Sabres would score nine runs in the top half of the first inning.
  • Freshman Hope Matta and junior Katelyn Matenaer each drove in two runs to highlight the big inning.
  • Benedictine responded scoring four runs in its half of the first inning and tied the game at 9-9 with five in the second.
  • Marian immediately retook the lead in the third with Matenaer driving in her third run of the game with a single.
  • The Eagles once again immediately had a response tying the game with a run of their own.
  • Both offenses then went quiet for the next seven innings with Benedictine earning a walk-off win scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the 11th.

Freshman Hope Matta went 6-for-9 (.667) on the day with two runs scored and two driven in.
Junior Emalee Depa (1-6) bounced back after a tough start in game one to provide 8.2 innings of relief in game two allowing just one earned run on five hits.
Junior Katelyn Matenaer was 3-for-7 (.429) in game two with three runs driven in and a run scored.
