FOND DU LAC - Marian University NCAA men's ice hockey (0-0-1, 0-0-0 NCHA) led by two goals twice but fell in a shootout after a 4-4 tie against Saint John's (Minn.).
- The first power play of the season couldn't have gone any better as sophomore Eemil Rautio lit the lamp six seconds into the man-advantage.
- Senior Noah Pickart and junior Nolan Flint each assisted the goal.
- With 7:02 left in the period Marian was able to add to its lead when junior Robert Pizzey scored with assistance from senior Alex Enegren and sophomore Edison Weeks.
- That 2-0 advantage held going into the second period.
- Saint John's (Minn.) started fast in the second period scoring twice in a span of 51 seconds to tie the game.
- Marian retook the lead with a goal from sophomore Brendan Bottem at the 11:01 mark, assists to Flint and Rautio.
- Another short-lived power-play chance saw Marian score 12 seconds later.
- It was an all Fondy goal as junior Cole Carlson found the back of the net with help from Pickart and freshman Brett Sabel.
- SJU scored with 3:01 left to cut their deficit down to 4-3 going into the final period.
- Another strong start from the Johnnies saw them tie the game 4:00 into the third.
- After a scoreless overtime and three saves each way to open the shootout, SJU managed the only goal of the shootout on the fourth shooter.
- Marian finished with a 37-31 edge in shots with 22 of their attempts coming in the first two periods.
- The Johnnies had a 6-3 edge in shots in overtime.
- Each team had 38 face-off victories.
- Marian had two power-play goals on four chances and the Johnnies had one on five opportunities.
- The Sabres are now 1-1-3 all-time against Saint John's (Minn.) with this being the third straight stalemate.
- This is the first tie in the season opener for Marian since the 2012-13 season.
