WESTFIELD, Ind. - Marian University baseball (0-1, 0-0 NACC) had a late two-run lead split by in a 6-5 loss to Wartburg to open the season.
- The Knights were able to plate a pair of runs with two outs to open the scoring in the top of the first.
- Marian was able to plate a run of their own in the bottom half when junior Keon Booker drove home a run.
- A wild pitch in the bottom of the third saw sophomore Ayden Kanaman touch home to even the score at 2-2.
- Then in the fifth inning, Marian took its first lead of the game when junior Lucas Lemons stole third and scored on a throwing error.
- A bases-loaded walk from Kanaman in the bottom of the sixth brought home another Sabre to put Marian ahead 4-2.
- A tough eighth inning saw Wartburg take advantage of three Marian errors to take a 6-4 lead.
- Marian was able to put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth when junior Jason Sims drove in a run with a two-out single.
- That would be as close as Marian would get, however, dropping the first game of the season by a run.
- Each team had seven hits and four errors on the defensive end.
- Of the 11 combined runs, only six of them were earned.
- This marked the earliest season-opening game for Marian in program history.
- This was the first meeting between the two programs.
