Late heroics from Haslett lift Marian men's basketball to comeback win

FOND DU LAC - Freshman Marvin Haslett scored nine of his 22 points in the final three minutes of regulation, including the tying free throws that sent the game to overtime, as Marian University men's basketball (11-9, 7-6 NACC) erased a 20-point deficit to defeat Edgewood, 97-93.

  • Behind a strong transition offense, Edgewood scored 18 points in the first five minutes to jump out to a quick start. 
  • Senior Derek Lindert accounted for seven of the next nine Sabre points, helping Marian keep pace with the Eagles. 
  • Two free throws from senior Jazz Orozco evened the score at 22 with 11:01 left in the first half. 
  • Edgewood used a 13-0 spurt over the next five minutes as part of a 30-10 run to close the first half.
  • Marian surrendered 52 points in the first half and trailed the Eagles by 20 at the break. 
  • Edgewood's Hunter Hardyman had 14 points in the half, going 4-of-4 from three, as the Eagles hit 9-of-12 (.750) from deep as a team. 
  • The Sabres came out of halftime with more urgency, holding the Eagles to just one field goal in the first three and a half minutes. 
  • Freshman Marvin Haslett made his defensive presence felt, blocking Hardyman's three-point attempt and forcing a shot-clock violation on the next inbounds. 
  • Lindert tallied seven of the next ten Sabre points, including a three-pointer that trimmed the lead to eight with 10:40 left. 
  • Two minutes later, Orozco's second-chance layup cut the Sabres' deficit to six. 
  • The Eagles went on an 8-2 run to extend their lead to 12, but back-to-back buckets from Haslett brought Marian back into the game. 
  • Junior Andrew Ayeni fouled out with four minutes remaining, finishing with 15 points. 
  • With Ayeni out, freshman Max Breitenbach was thrust into crucial minutes, cheered on by his former Kohler High School teammates in attendance.
  • Haslett's second-chance layup brought the Sabres within three at 2:47. On the next possession, senior Alex Vassilakis completed a three-point play with a second-chance layup and free throw, trimming the lead to two. 
  • Edgewood and Marian traded baskets over the next minute, with the Eagles holding a four-point lead with 35 seconds remaining. 
  • Breitenbach went to the line and sank both free throws, cutting Marian's deficit to two. 
  • With nine seconds remaining, Edgewood had a chance to make it a four-point game at the free-throw line but missed both, leaving Marian with a final opportunity. 
  • Haslett rushed down the floor and was fouled on a layup with just one second left. With the pressure on, he sank both free throws, sending the game into overtime. 
  • Marian outscored Edgewood 53-33 in the second half. 
  • Overtime opened with aggressive play from Breitenbach, who scored the first four Sabre points. 
  • Marian capitalized on Edgewood's foul trouble, going 10-of-16 (.625) from the line in overtime. 
  • Leading 94-88, the Sabres saw Edgewood hit a corner three with 27 seconds remaining to trim the lead to three. 
  • Following two missed free throws by Breitenbach, the Eagles pushed the ball upcourt and converted on a layup with seven seconds remaining, cutting the lead to 94-93. 
  • Lindert was fouled and went to the line, making the first free throw but missing the second. Off the miss, Breitenbach grabbed a crucial offensive rebound and fed the ball back to Lindert. 
  • Lindert sealed the win with two more free throws, and the Sabres escaped with a season-defining 97-93 overtime victory.

  • Haslett is averaging 17.6 points over his last five starts, including 20 or more points in each of the past three contests. 
  • Marian shot season-highs in free-throw makes and attempts, going 29-of-41 (.707) for the game.

Senior Alex Vassilakis posted his third double-double in the past four games, finishing with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
