Strong second half shooting lifts Marian men's basketball over Benedictine

FOND DU LAC - Marian University men's basketball (12-9, 8-6 NACC) shot 54.5% in the second half and made 19 free throws to secure a 75-62 win over Benedictine.

  • Benedictine jumped out to a 9-3 lead, holding Marian to 1-of-6 shooting to start the game.  
  • Marian answered with a 14-0 run, as five different Sabres scored during the stretch.
  • A five-point swing by senior Alex Vassilakis extended Marian's lead to 12, their largest of the first half. 
  • The Eagles held Marian scoreless over the final 4:31 of the first half. Both teams combined for just 3-of-13 shooting during this stretch, as Marian's lead shrank to 32-27 at the break. 
  • Vassilakis led the way at the half with 10 points and six rebounds, while junior Andrew Ayeni added five assists, four rebounds, and three steals. 
  • Marian began the second half with a four-point play on a corner three by senior Derek Lindert
  • A few plays later, freshman Marvin Haslett finished an and-one layup off the fastbreak. Haslett made six of seven free throws in the second half. 
  • Noah Mason, a sophomore forward for Benedictine, kept the Eagles in the game with eight points in the opening five minutes of the second half. 
  • With 13:42 remaining, the Eagles took their first lead of the second half at 44-42 as part of a 10-2 run. 
  • Marian responded with an 11-2 run, sparked by freshman Max Breitenbach, who scored a career-high 11 points. 
  • Vassilakis hit an and-one layup to give Marian a 59-52 lead with just over seven minutes remaining. 
  • Back-to-back corner threes from Haslett and sophomore Harper Krolak pushed the Sabres' lead back to double digits. 
  • The Sabres sealed the victory at the line, holding on for a 75-62 victory.
