FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – One day after recording its first win of the season, the Marian University women's hockey team settled for a 1-1 draw with conference foe Finlandia University at the Waupun Community Center this afternoon, Jan. 21.
Both goals came in the first period and were followed by great goaltending the rest of the way. Nanci Crossman found the net on a power play five minutes into the game to give Finlandia its first lead of the series. When it looked as if the Lions would take a lead into the first intermission,
Amanda Waigand knotted the score with her 10th goal of the year, and third of the series, with 59 seconds left in the period.
Marian moves to 1-14-2 overall, 1-10-1 in the NCHA, while Finlandia moves to 0-14-2 (0-11-1 NCHA).
Crossman's power play goal came on a slap shot from about 20 feet out, right in front of the Marian bench. Elizaveta Monakhova earned the assist on the score. The Lions were 1-for-5 in power play opportunities.
With time winding down in the period, Waigand found space as she took a pass from
Alex DeBoer and slipped behind the defense to set up a 1-on-1 try, which she converted. The freshman started left, then cut right in front of the goalie and blasted one past her glove side into the upper-right corner of the goal at the 19:01 mark of the period.
Both netminders stood up to the task the rest of the way. Marian's
Amanda Alexander made 26 saves in the game, including 10 in the second period and eight in the third period and overtime combined. Meanwhile, Finlandia's Ashley Pavlish turned away 31 shots for the game, including 14 in the second period and 10 in the third period and overtime combined.
The Sabres outshot the Lions, 32-27, in the contest and both squads were called for seven penalties, all of them minor infractions.
The Sabres will take to the road to do battle with NCHA foe UW-River Falls next Friday-Saturday, Jan. 27-28.
