Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - The Marian University women's hockey team put on a show tonight, November 21, at the Blue Line Family Ice Center as the Sabres picked up their first win in team history against conference rivals Concordia Wisconsin (4-2-1). The 5-1 upset was the result of an explosive second period as the Sabres win their third straight and improve to 3-4 on the season.
It was an overall dominant performance for the Sabres. With speedy skaters flying through defenders, effective physicality and pinpoint accuracy, the Sabres were playing at their highest level of the season.
Concordia Wisconsin found themselves with an early 1-0 lead, when a tripping call on Marian's Sarah Bier turned into a power play goal for Alexis Machuga, her first of the season. That was the one blemish on Marian goalie Amanda Alexander's night, as the senior saved the next 28 shots that came her way to silence the Falcons.
Bier redeemed herself early in the second period, tying the game with a swing of her stick at an incoming pass from Amanda Waigand. The goal was just the start of an impressive offensive performace by the sabres.,
With the Sabres quickly on the power play just a minute later, they wasted no time in gaining the lead. Paige Picard found an open Nina Laurie, thanks to the man advantage, who tacked on her sixth goal of the season to put the Sabres on top by one.
Fast skating Rian Lennon and Emily Everson were next to add to the onslaught of attacks, when Lennon skated through a few defenders and dumped the puck off to Everson to finish the job. The goal was the team's third in six minutes, but they weren't done just yet.
Less than a minute later, it was Amanda Waigands turn to join the party. The team's top scorer took advantage of a pass by Bier, whizzing the puck by Concordia goaltender Bridget Slater to extend the lead to three.
With less than a minute remaining in the period Waigand was at it again. Seniors Kristin Skubic and Kaitlyn Johnson set up the play, finding an open Waigand to finish the job and provide a large safety blanket for the third period.
Alexander saved thirteen Falcon shots in the final period, helping the Sabres come away with the 5-1 win. The three game win streak ties the Sabres longest in school history, set in 2012. The team looks to keep the streak alive on Tuesday, November 25, when the travel to Stevens Point Wisconsin to take on the 6-1 Pioneers. The puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
