Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin (SabreAthletics.com) -- The Marian University women's hockey team tied their most wins in a single season today, Jan. 11, by shutting out the Hamline Pipers, 2-0, at the Blue Line Family Ice Center while sweeping the weekend series.
Defensively, the Pipers matched up well with the Sabres, but penalties were a constant problem for them in the series. After allowing two power play goals in yesterday's meeting, the Pipers allowed two more today. The Sabres, on the other hand, were able to run an effective defense with four skaters on the ice as they were 6-of-6 stopping the power play on the day.
It was a quiet first period for the Sabres as they were only able to get five shots off thanks to an aggressive Piper defense. Despite getting double-digit shots off, the Pipers were unable to capitalize in the period, keeping the game scoreless going into the second.
A late first period tripping call on Hamline's Sam Berger put the Sabres on the power play for 1:24 to start the second period, which they quickly took advantage of. Just 31 seconds into the period, Nina Laurie found an open Sarah Bier who dropped it off to Amanda Waigand who finished with her 10th goal of the season.
Opportunities continued to arise for the Sabres in the second period thanks to Piper penalties. After failing to convert off an interference call 5 minutes later, the Sabres were given another shot shortly after when Hamline's Berger took another infraction. The player advantage helped construct smooth passing lanes for the Sabres, and they were eventually able to connect on two quick passes from Brittany Syms and Paige Picard which set up Rian Lennon for the goal.
Amanda Alexander, coming off an NCHA Defensive Player of the Week award, was clutch in net once again for the Sabres, making 28 saves to keep the Pipers scoreless. The shutout was her second in a row.
The Sabres have a tough stretch of conference games ahead of them to finish out the season. Currently, the Sabres sit in sixth place but with momentum from their current two-game win streak, they have an opportunity to move up the ladder in the final 10 games of the season.
After 10 days of rest, the Sabres return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 21, for their final game of the season series against second place Lake Forest. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.
