Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team put up a good fight against conference opponents Lake Forest tonight, Jan.21, at the Blue Line Family Ice center, but were unable to take advantage of the opportunity as they were set back 2-0.
There was little success on the power play on the night by either team as the two went 0-12 combined with the extra skater. Halfway through the third period with the Sabres trailing by two, Lake Forest Committed back-to-back fouls to give Marian a five-on-three advantage. Lake Forest's three-man defense limited the Sabres to only three shots to hold them scoreless.
The Foresters came out aggressive in the first period, taking 14 shots on goal. Four minutes into the period they were able to connect when Holly Lesperance scored her fourth goal of the season.
Lesperance continued to make a name for herself on the night, both negatively and positively. She continuously provided the Sabres chances, committing four minors, but the inability of the Sabres to capitalize silenced the flaws. She was able to straighten out her act thirteen minutes into the second, setting up teammate Marissa Weber for her fifth goal of the season to gain the two-goal lead that they held onto until the end.
The Sabre defense held their own on the night, allowing 19 fewer shots than the last time the two teams met. Despite allowing the two early goals, Amanda Alexander found much more success against the Foresters, saving 93 percent of the shots on the night.
Nina Laurie had success on the night fooling the Forester defense, but was unable to slip a shot past the guard of Casey Hartfiel. Her five shots led the Sabres but were not enough to help them find a third straight win.
The Sabres will make consecutive road trips to De Pere, Wis. over the next two weekends as they have three straight road games scheduled against St. Norbert. There first action starts Friday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m.
