Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.Com) – The Marian University women's hockey team put up a tough fight against the Concordia Wis. Falcons on Senior Day at the Blue Line Family Ice Center as the finished in a 4-4 tie. The Sabres had a one-goal lead in the final minute of regulation when Concordia Wisconsin's, Veronika Metanova, scored a heartbreaker with 31 seconds remaining to ultimately end the game in a stalemate.
The Falcons were the first to get on the board when freshman, Lexi Holman, was able to pick up her sixth goal of the season just over ten minutes into play.
A checking call on Marian's, Kristin Skubic, put the Falcons on the power play just under five minutes into the second period. With the Falcons on the attack, Marian senior, Nina Laurie, stole the puck from the Falcons and capitalized on a breakaway to even the score at one with a shorthanded goal.
Just under two minutes later, fellow senior, Amanda Waigand, put the Sabres on top 2-1 with her team-leading 17th goal of the season.
A holding call on Concordia's, Metanova, just over three minutes into the third put the Sabres on the power play as they looked to extend their lead. Marian's, Sarah Bier, was able to connect with Waigand and Paige Picard to increase the Sabre's lead with her sixth goal of the season just under four minutes into the third.
Metanova was able to answer the Sabres goal four minutes later when she hooked up with teammates, Emily Heckendorf and Elizabeth Otto, for her first goal of the night.
Marian's offense was very active on the night and played with high intensity outshooting the Falcons 29-25. Bier put the Sabres back on top by two when she scored her second goal of the night just under three minutes later.
It didn't take long for the Falcons to respond when Emily Heckendorf scored her team leading 12th goal less than a minute later.
It was desperation time for the Falcons with just over a minute left in regulation when they pulled goalie, Andrea Mizanskey. The skater advantage proved to be too much for the Sabres as the Falcons were able to capitalize late.
The tie solidifies the sixth seed in the quarter finals of the Slaats Cup Tournament. The Sabres still have two contests left in the regular season, starting with a trip to Adrian, Michigan, on Friday, February 20, to take on the first place Bull Dogs. The puck is set to drop at 3 p.m.
