Sabre Softball Goes Toe-to-Toe with No. 15 CUW

FOND DU LAC - Marian University softball (13-15, 8-8 NACC) was defeated 9-2 and 9-6 in nine innings by No. 15 Concordia Wisconsin.

GAME 1
  • A pitcher's duel broke out in game one as CUW scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth in a low scoring affair.
  • The Falcons were able to take advantage of three Marian errors in the seventh inning to build a 9-0 lead.
  • Marian responded in the bottom half, however, building momentum for game two.
  • Junior Katelyn Matenaer took the first pitch of the final frame deep for her fifth homer of the season.
  • Freshman Ariana Schliepp drove in a run two batters later with a double to set the final at 9-2.
GAME 2
  • Schliepp then opened the scoring for game two in the first with a two-out single that brought in freshman Abigail Schreiber.
  • CUW answered with a home in the next half inning to go ahead.
  • The Falcon lead didn't last long, however, as Matenaer gave Marian the lead driving in a pair of runs with a double in the bottom of the second.
  • A first-and-third roundown later in the inning saw Matenaer to put Marian ahead 4-2.
  • The Falcons would score three runs in the fourth inning to retake the lead at 5-4.
  • Marian was able to put a rally together in the seventh sparked by a leadoff double from senior Kaley Ludvigsen.
  • Freshman Morgan Mack later drove her in with a sacrifice fly to send the game to extras.
  • After a scoreless eighth, CUW found some holes and plated four runs in the ninth inning.
  • The Sabres were able to bring the tying run to the plate with just one out in the bottom half but could only plate one run putting the final at 9-6.

Freshman Ariana Schliepp was 3-for-6 on the day with two runs driven in.
Junior Katelyn Matenaer drove in four runs between the two games scoring twice with three hits.
Freshman Morgan Mack (1-2) allowed just one hit in her first 3.0 innings off work and was able to help force extras in game two.
