Sabre Softball Drops Nail Biter in Extras to Open NACC Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ill. - Marian University softball (17-20, 12-12 NACC) scored first but fell to Dominican 2-1 in eight innings to open the NACC Tournament.

  • Pitching dominated as the NACC Tournament opened with an extra innings thriller.
  • The Stars looked poised to break the scoreless tie in the fourth but senior Julia Corona would throw out a runner at the plate from right field.
  • The Marian sixth inning opened with a single from sophomore Kerena Wood and led to the first run of the game.
  • After another single and sacrifice bunt from Corona, Wood touched home on a wild pitch to open the scoring.
  • The Sabres were able to load the bases shortly after with just one out but couldn't add on to a 1-0 lead.
  • The lead didn't last long as Dominican responded with a two-out single in the bottom half of the sixth that tied the game at 1-1.
  • Marian had an opportunity in the seventh to retake the lead but couldn't plate any runs with runners on second and third with just one out.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, the Stars were able to walk off the Sabres after an errant throw went into the outfield off of a sacrifice bunt.
  • Marian stranded 11 runners on base in the defeat and fell to 0-5 this season in games that needed extra innings.

Sophomore Kerena Wood was 2-for-4 and scored the only run of the game for Marian.
Freshman Ariana Schliepp was 2-for-3 with a walk at the plate.
Senior Emalee Depa (8-11) took the tough-luck lossing going 7.0+ innings allowing just one earned run with four strikeouts.
