Miller, Spies named CSC Academic All-District

GREENWOOD, Ind. - Two student-athletes from the Marian University women's ice hockey program have been named Academic All-District by the organization College Sports Communicators (CSC).

The CSC Academic All-American program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their efforts both in competition and in the classroom.  To be eligible, a student-athlete must compete in 90 percent of their team's games, or start in at least 66 percent of games, and attain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5. They must also hold at least sophomore standing at their institution.

Sophomore Piper Miller (Fort Frances, Ont.) earns her first CSC Academic All-District award after a strong second season.  She skated in all 27 games during the season netting nine goals with seven assists for 16 total points.  Miller posted multiple points in five games with multi-goal games coming on the road at Bethel and at home against Lawrence.  She had an especially strong finish to the first half of the season where she had three multi-point games in the final five games.  Miller also had a stretch where she had five points over a three-game span between the Lawrence series and the first game against MSOE.  One of her goals came in the opener of the NCHA Slaats Cup Playoffs.

Junior Ella Spies (Fond du Lac, Wis.) adds her first CSC Academic All-District selection after being selected All-NCHA.  She finished the campaign second on the team with her 19 points coming from seven goals and 12 assists.  Her 19 points were the seventh-most for a single season in Marian history with her 12 helpers tying her for second in the Marian single-season records.  Among all skaters in the NCHA, Spies ranked 20th for points and 16th for assists.  Spies had five multi-point games during the season including in game two of the NCHA Slaats Cup Quarterfinals where she had a goal and an assist.  Her efforts in that game helped lead Marian to its first postseason victory in program history.  In a non-conference series against MSOE, Spies opened the second half of the season with a four-point weekend to earn an NCHA Star of the Week award.  Spies also netted the game-winning goal in overtime at No. 6/6 St. Nobert to give Marian its first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent.

This is the first time in program history that multiple student-athletes from the Sabre women's ice hockey program have been honored in the same season.
