ACHA D2 REPEATS AS HAP CUP CHAMPIONS
The Marian University ACHA D2 program was able to maintain its possession of the NCHL Hap Cup defeating Purdue Northwest in the championship game for a second straight season.
Marian was able to roll past DePaul and No. 8 CUW to earn its spot in the championship game against the No. 6 seed in the central region PNW. The Pride were able to strike first with a power-play goal coming just 56 seconds into the game. This lead held into the second period before
Devon Butler and
Easton Nick scored goals separated by just 59 seconds to give the Sabres a 2-1 edge going into the final period.
Purdue Northwest was able to quickly tie the game just 1:17 into the final stanza. They then retook the lead with 12:16 left to play with a short-handed score. Down to their final chance, Marian was able to find an equalizer off the stick of
Jace Weber with just 20 seconds remaining in regulation. The Sabres took advantage of this new life when
Blake Stafford caused a turnover and scored five minutes into the extra session to give Marian the NCHL Hap Cup. Marian improved to 6-1 in the championship game of the NCHL Hap Cup Tournament with the win.
Marian was able to qualify for regionals but saw its season come to an end against No. 7 Wisconsin with a 4-3 final on the wrong end of another overtime game.
