EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Two first period goals were enough to propel host University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire over the visiting Marian University women's hockey team, 2-1, this evening, Jan. 13.
Rachel Mullendore scored her fourth goal of the season in the third period, but it proved too little, too late for the Sabres.
Eau Claire's Stephanie Hatcher and Casey McMullen both scored in the first period and within five minutes of each other. At the 4:04 mark, Hatcher took a pass from Alyssa Ahlgren to put the Blugolds on the board. Then McMullen used a nice feed to give the hosts a commanding 2-0 lead at the 8:58 mark. Mullendore's goal came with 18:54 left in the third period.
The Bluegolds improve to 4-10-2 overall, 3-7-1 in the NCHA with the win, while the Sabres fall to 0-13-1 (0-9 NCHA).
The senior,
Kaytlin Ruzicka, got the start in goal for the Sabres and made 25 saves despite taking the loss. Her counterpart, Morgan Pieper, made 24 and earned the win.
Both teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon for a 2 p.m. start in Eau Claire.
