RIVER FALLS, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – An
Amanda Reimann goal gave the Marian University women's hockey team an early lead, but it wasn't enough to knock off eighth-ranked and host UW-River Falls as the Falcons netted five unanswered goals for a 7-2 NCHA victory this evening, Jan. 27.
Reimann's goal at the 4:32 mark of the first period got the Marian bench fired up as it took an unexpected lead against the nationally-ranked UWRF squad. The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Falcons' Katie Batters scored 42 seconds later to tie the score at 1-1. Alice Cranston gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead, scoring at the 13:54 mark. UWRF would go on to score five consecutive before taking home the convincing victory.
UW-River Falls improves to 14-3-2 overall, 12-2-1 in the NCHA with the win. Meanwhile, the Sabres fall to 1-15-2 (1-11-1 NCHA) with the loss.
Reimann scored off a rebound assisted by
Alex DeBoer to give the Sabres an early 1-0 lead. Batters then came back to tie the game 42 seconds later with her 13th goal of the year, sparking a string of five consecutive goals by the Falcons spanning into the third period.
Tied at 1-1, Cranston scored her ninth goal of the season to give the Falcons the advantage, one in which they would not relinquish. Cranston added a second goal after Crysta Lowell made it 3-1 with just under two minutes to go in the second period. Cranston's goal a minute and 20 seconds later gave the hosts a commanding, 4-1, edge heading into the second intermission.
Trailing 5-1,
Amanda Waigand got into the action, registering her 11th goal of the year at the 5:26 mark in the third period.
Kristin Skubic and
Brittany Syms each were credited with assists on the play.
But the Falcons proved too much, showing why they are ranked eighth in the nation according to the most recent USCHO.com poll. They added two more goals late to give them seven for the game en route to the win.
Marian goalie,
Katie Bassett, made 39 saves in goal despite taking the loss. Meanwhile, her counterpart, Melissa Deardorff, made 12 stops in earning the win.
Both teams will do it again tomorrow in a 2:05 p.m. start in River Falls.
