David Beres was the first four-time all-conference selection for the emerging Marian men's basketball program competing from 1976-1980. With abbreviated schedules compared to today, Beres scored 1,361 points in just 78 games for a program-best 17.4 points per game average. Beres started in all 78 games he played in and also scored in double-digits in 77 of those 78 games. Beres remains one of the top scorers in Sabre history ranking fourth on that all-time list, being only one of five Sabres to reach the 1,300-point plateau. The Sabres had three double-digit win seasons during his time, only two such seasons prior to his career, totaling a 47-35 (.573) record. Beres captained Marian to back-to-back Wisconsin Conference of Independent Colleges (WCIC) championships in 1979 and 1980. Beres' junior season saw Marian post a 14-6 (.700) record, the fifth-highest winning percentage for a single season in Sabre men's basketball history.
